Exposed encounters

Play within the child world of the school seemed to occupy at least three levels of visibility: exposed, visible and invisible. While, of course, these three levels of visibility were not rigidly separated or policed, certain activities and areas of the yard seemed to gain more attention and caused more discussion and analysis of a boy’s character in relation to his engagement in them. Invisible play generally constituted small group or dyadic activities such as playing cards, hand held video games and checkers. Visible play tended to involve activities such as ‘chasing’, fantasy games and basketball. Exposed play was almost always constituted by football and sometimes play fighting.
